“Excuse me,” the rink attendant called.

Wow. She’d gotten off her phone.

Leo and I skated in her direction.

Still holding hands.

“You all will have to leave now,” she said, snapping her gum.

Damn. I didn’t want to leave if it meant I had to let go of Leo’s hand.

“Why?” Henry asked, skating up to the wall at full speed and slamming on the breaks at the last minute.

The attendant’s eyes widened as she thought for sure he was going to come flying over the wall and take her out.

“You aren’t allowed to do slingshots. You gotta leave.”

Henry rolled his eyes. “Are you kidding? There’s not even anyone else here.”

Wes looked around the plaza. “And no one else is coming. So why don’t you relax?”

Even though she was wearing a mask, it was easy to see she wasn’t happy. “I’ll call the police if you don't leave. The rules are all posted right there,” she said pointing to a sign on the side of her booth.

I wouldn’t mind leaving. I was getting tired. But the guys didn’t seem happy at all.

Wes pointed at the sign. “That says nothing about slingshots.”

She looked at it as if she expected it to. “No, but it says no roughhousing.”

“I wasn’t roughhousing,” Leo said.

“But your friends were.”

Leo sighed. “They’re not my friends. I can’t stand them.”

Wes snickered behind us.

I didn’t know these guys very well, but it was clear this girl was no match for them.

She shrugged. “Very funny. You all came together.”

Leo shook his head. “No. I just happened to arrive at the same time these yahoos did. And I can tell you, ma’am. They are troublemakers. I could see it from a mile away. So I’m happy you’re kicking them out.”

Henry stepped between Leo and me, forcing him to drop my hand.

Bummer.

He got in his face and puffed his chest out. “Who you calling a yahoo, asshole?”

Wes was trying not to laugh. “Now you have a reason to call the police. Yahoos versus the assholes. Never ends well for anyone.”

The girl didn’t think the guys’ act was funny at all. “Fine. I’m calling the police. We don’t need your kind here.”

Wes threw his hands up. “Our kind? You need some kind of people here because this place is fucking empty.”

“Guys, I think I’m actually ready to leave. I’ve been here a while,” I said.

They looked at each other.

“Oh. Okay. Let’s jam, then,” Henry said.

The attendant looked victorious, and we left the ice to switch back to our street shoes.

On the way back to our apartment building, even though my jeans were soaked, it felt good to be walking with the guys. I didn’t want it to end so I purposely slowed down, and because they were nice, they matched my pace.

“So, Nina,” Wes said, “we wanted to invite you for Christmas dinner. Henry’s cooking again.”

“I am so psyched about that,” Les added.

So nice.

“Yeah Nina, we’ve spent a little bit of time together now and you know you haven’t been around anyone else, and we know we haven’t. So you can feel comfortable joining us.
